Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan said artificial intelligence could reduce the overall drug discovery and development timeline from 12 to 14 years down to eight years, while potentially raising the probability of success in human trials from 8% to 15% or higher. Speaking after the company topped second quarter earnings estimates, Narasimhan noted that Novartis began investing in AI years ago, working with Palantir in 2016 and 2017 to build a data platform called Data 42, and is now scaling AI across every phase of research and development. He cautioned that it will take 8 to 10 years to fully measure AI's impact because the fixed timelines for animal testing and human clinical trials cannot be shortened, and enough AI-supported medicines must complete that process before the benefits become clear.
