NRSInsights reported that August 2026 same-store sales at independent retailers on its network decreased 1.1% year-over-year, following a 3.3% increase in July. Units sold fell 1.6% and baskets per store dropped 3.1% compared to a year earlier, while the average price of top-selling items rose 1.7%, unchanged from July. The data, based on approximately 254 million transactions from about 26,200 stores, showed regional weakness led by the Washington DC metro area, with the Midwest and Great Lakes outperforming. NRSInsights is a unit of IDT Corporation, whose POS terminals processed $2.3 billion in sales across 155 million transactions during August.
