Amkor Technology IncNvidia's $1.5B prepayment and multi-year agreement to expand Amkor's US packaging capacity secures significant demand for Amkor's services.
Nvidia has signed a multi-year, $1.5 billion agreement with Amkor Technology to expand advanced chip packaging and testing capacity in the United States, sending Amkor shares up about 15% in late trading. Under the deal, Nvidia will make a prepayment to help Amkor expand its US operations, including capacity in Arizona, and the two companies will jointly develop packaging and testing technologies for Nvidia's AI and accelerated-computing platforms. The agreement deepens an existing relationship in which Amkor already handles advanced packaging for Nvidia's data center processors, and it follows a separate 10-year partnership Amkor struck with TSMC in June to build out US packaging capabilities. The news arrives ahead of Nvidia's August 26 earnings report, with Wall Street consensus calling for fiscal second-quarter revenue of roughly $91.8 billion and EPS around $2.08, modestly above management's own guidance of about $91 billion in revenue, plus or minus 2%, and gross margins near 75%. The deal adds to a pattern of heavy AI infrastructure spending, including SpaceX's recent disclosure that it will build its AI systems exclusively on Nvidia GPUs and expects to receive a very significant percentage of Nvidia's GPU output next year.
