NVIDIA CorporationNvidia acquires Hugging Face for $12.9B, expanding into software and hedging against custom chips.
Nvidia has agreed to acquire AI developer platform Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, a move that extends the chipmaker beyond hardware into the software layer of the AI stack. The deal gives Nvidia access to a platform used by over 18 million developers and hosting more than 3 million models, positioning it to remain central in AI even as customers like Meta, Google, and OpenAI increasingly adopt custom silicon from Broadcom. Broadcom recently raised its AI chip revenue forecast to about $115 billion for fiscal 2027 and expects that to double to roughly $230 billion in fiscal 2028, though it faces rising competition in Google's TPU programs from Marvell. Needham analyst Rajvindra Gill reiterated a Buy rating on Nvidia with a $300 price target, while Reuters BreakingViews called the acquisition a strategic insurance policy. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has committed to keeping Hugging Face open to all developers and computing platforms, including rivals like AMD, but the deal does not fully eliminate the custom-silicon threat.
