Insurers offering Obamacare health plans are requesting a 14% median premium increase for 2027 over 2026 rates, according to health policy research group KFF. The proposed rate represents the second-highest increase since 2018. Insurers must submit proposals to regulators by July 15, detailing expected costs and planned price changes. KFF said insurers expect a sicker patient pool to add 4% to premiums next year, while broader economic inflation, rising drug costs, and increased provider consolidation also drive the increase. Obamacare enrollment fell 13% in 2026 to an estimated 19.2 million people after extra pandemic-era subsidies expired, causing premiums to rise 58% and deductibles to increase about $1,000 per person. KFF analyzed filings by 77 insurers in 16 states and Washington, D.C., and found that premiums are on track to rise more than 33% between 2025 and 2027 based on the latest proposed rate.
