Alphabet Inc Class COpenAI's ad business growth threatens Google Search market share.

OpenAI's advertising business has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, up from $100 million six months ago, according to D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria, who warns that this growth will take market share from Google Search. Luria told CNBC that ChatGPT ads are the closest substitute for Google Search ads, as both capture users at high-intent moments of information-seeking. While OpenAI's ad revenue is still a tiny fraction of Google's search advertising, which Luria estimates will generate $250 billion this year, he believes OpenAI could grow its ad business to tens of billions, posing a threat to Alphabet. Alphabet reported Google Search & other revenue of $63.27 billion in Q2 fiscal 2026, up 17% year over year, and CEO Sundar Pichai noted that AI mode has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users. Luria also highlighted that the consumer ad market is zero-sum, with time shifting to AI conversations coming out of traditional media, social media, and YouTube, making Google doubly exposed through Search and YouTube.
