Apple Inc.OpenAI's retreat on its first consumer device eases the competitive threat to Apple's iPhone/Siri ecosystem.

OpenAI's lawyers told a federal judge in open court that the company's first consumer device is "not coming anytime soon," a retreat from CEO Sam Altman's earlier statements that prototypes were in hand and a preview could come this year. The judge refused Apple's demand for immediate access to OpenAI's product schematics, devices, accounts and records, told both sides to narrow their requests, and ordered a joint discovery plan ahead of the next court date on October 14; OpenAI accused Apple of a "shoot first, think later approach." Apple's June-quarter iPhone revenue rose 22% to $54.3 billion, with the iPhone active install base at an all-time high and more than 2.5 billion active devices disclosed in fiscal Q1 2026. Services revenue reached $30.7 billion, up 12% year over year, with paid subscriptions surpassing 1.5 billion, and Apple released a new Siri that CEO Tim Cook called profoundly more capable and personal. Apple shares traded at $333.11 on Sept. 14, 2026, up 42.84% over the past year, and at $330.50 on Sept. 15 with year-to-date gains of 21.9%, giving the company a market cap around $4.82 trillion at roughly 43 times earnings.
