The Fisheries Agency announced on the 28th that the migration volume of Pacific saury to waters near Japan in the 2026 fishing season is expected to fall below last year's level. The estimated distribution volume of saury migrating to fishing grounds is 429,000 tonnes, the lowest since comparable records began in 2003, and significantly below last year's 1.099 million tonnes. The estimated proportion of one-year-old fish, which are the main target of catches, is also low at 17.2 percent, down from 59.6 percent last year, and the fish are expected to be smaller in size, raising the possibility of another poor catch this year.
