PENGU surged more than 62% over the past week as speculation about a potential Pudgy Penguins initial public offering reignited demand for the Solana-based token. The token traded near $0.0095 on Monday after gaining roughly 15% in 24 hours, briefly breaking above the psychologically important $0.01 threshold, with market capitalization climbing toward $600 million and daily trading volume exceeding $400 million. The rally followed a cryptic post from Pudgy Penguins CEO Luca Netz featuring eyes, a penguin, a building, and the word "soon," which traders interpreted as a possible reference to a stock exchange, although Netz did not explicitly mention an IPO. The market's interpretation draws heavily on comments Netz made in August 2025, when he said he would be disappointed if Pudgy Penguins did not become a publicly traded company within two years, effectively setting a 2027 target, but the company has not announced an IPO, submitted public filings, or confirmed that preparations are underway. PENGU's breakout also triggered a short squeeze, with short positions accounting for approximately $842,000 of nearly $1 million in liquidations during the initial move on Aug. 21, and exchange promotions such as LBank's $500,000 Pudgy Penguins campaign provided another catalyst. Pudgy Penguins has developed into more than an NFT collection since Netz acquired the project in 2022, with plush toys, collectibles and trading cards now available through major retailers including Walmart and more than 1,800 Target stores across the United States, and Netz previously projected annual sales of around $50 million, with merchandise accounting for most of the revenue. However, PENGU holders do not own equity in the company or have an automatic claim on revenue from toy sales, and if Pudgy Penguins lists publicly, the stock and token could compete for capital rather than necessarily rising together.
