Picard Medical, parent company of SynCardia Systems, publicly presented the integrated architecture of its next-generation Emperor Total Artificial Heart for the first time at the IEEE EMBC 2026 conference in Toronto. The poster, presented by Emperor Program Lead Taha Hasekioglu, detailed how the patent-pending Emperor Drive System integrates with the clinically proven SynCardia Total Artificial Heart ventricles, which have supported more than 2,100 patients worldwide. The Emperor Drive System is a compact electromechanical driver designed to replace the current pneumatic drivers and advance the platform toward future full implantability. The presentation also summarized preclinical evaluations showing physiologic preload-dependent output, stable performance across clinically relevant afterload ranges, and acute porcine implantation results supporting anatomic compatibility and short-duration hemodynamic stability. The SynCardia Total Artificial Heart remains the only FDA-approved, commercially available total artificial heart.
