Poll shows 76% of Canadians support withdrawing from US trade talks

A survey by the Angus Reid Institute found that 76% of Canadians support the federal government's decision to withdraw from trade negotiations with the United States, with backing across every province. Even among Conservative Party supporters, 53% believe withdrawing is the right move rather than accepting an unfavourable deal. Meanwhile, 62% agree with the plan to impose dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs on September 8, and 64% believe Canada will ultimately emerge stronger by reducing its reliance on the US economy. However, 13% of Canadian workers are very concerned about losing their own jobs, and 25% have varying levels of anxiety. Experts estimate that if no agreement is reached, Canada's GDP will decline by 0.4%, potentially affecting up to 90,000 jobs.
