Whitbread, owner of Premier Inn, said forward bookings are stronger than last year, driven by positive leisure demand. Total sales rose 2% to £727 million in the 13 weeks to May 28, with UK accommodation sales up 3% and London sales 7% higher. The performance was partly offset by a slump in food and drink sales from restaurant closures, as the group pushes ahead with a five-year growth plan that includes shutting remaining Beefeater and Brewers Fayre sites. Chief Executive Dominic Paul said the forward booked position is ahead of last year and the company remains confident in the full-year outlook. Shares were 1.5% lower in early trading.
