Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi explained that the reason for removing the wording on fiscal consolidation from the Basic Policy was to unify the terminology with fiscal sustainability, a term used by international organizations. She was responding to a question from Komeito lawmaker Takeshi Sugi at the House of Councillors Budget Committee. Sugi pointed out that after the draft Basic Policy was reported, a Basic Policy shock occurred, marked by a weaker yen and rising interest rates, and sought the administration's view. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama stressed that there is no change in the government's policy of leaving monetary policy decisions to the Bank of Japan, and said she wants to secure market confidence through careful communication.
