Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd.Rapidus plans to undercut TSMC's 2nm wafer price by $9,000, potentially pressuring TSMC's pricing power and market share.

Japanese chipmaker Rapidus plans to mass-produce advanced 2-nanometer chips by 2027 and price them at about $21,000 per wafer, significantly below TSMC's reported $30,000 per wafer for the same node. Rapidus, launched in 2022 with Japanese government backing, is in talks with more than 60 companies but currently operates only a pilot line and has yet to prove it can manufacture at scale profitably. TSMC holds a dominant 73% share of the global foundry market and already began producing 2 nm chips this year, giving it a head start of over a year. Analysts note that major chip designers like Nvidia, Broadcom, and AMD choose partners based on reliability and quality rather than price alone, making it unlikely Rapidus will pose a serious threat to TSMC's dominance.
