Rio Tinto PLCRio Tinto agrees to acquire the Aurukun Bauxite Project, extending its existing bauxite operations in Western Cape York.
Rio Tinto has announced plans to take over the Aurukun Bauxite Project in Western Cape York, Queensland, Australia, from a joint venture of Glencore and Mitsubishi Development. Financial terms were not disclosed, and the transaction remains subject to approvals from the Government of Queensland and other Australian regulators. The asset would extend Rio Tinto's existing bauxite operations in the region, though Aurukun is held under a mineral development licence and has yet to be granted a mining lease. Glencore said the partnership had invested substantial resources into Aurukun over several years, including design work and development activity, but concluded that Rio Tinto's ownership offers the best opportunity for future development given its regional operations. In a separate development, Rio Tinto and the Ngarlawangga Aboriginal Corporation have reached an interim modernised agreement to strengthen their partnership and deliver long-term benefits for the Ngarlawangga People, building on a 2011 Participation Agreement with a jointly designed co-management approach.
