Second-quarter earnings for companies in the S&P 500 are expected to rise 52% from a year earlier, significantly supported by valuation gains on artificial intelligence-related investments. This comes as technology sector profits increased 74%, with Alphabet and Amazon.com booking large valuation gains on investments in leading AI companies such as Anthropic. According to Tajinder Dhillon, head of earnings research at LSEG, excluding valuation gains, the growth rate is estimated at 33%, which would still be the strongest quarter since 2021. Amazon's net income included 53.4 billion dollars in non-operating pre-tax gains, mainly from its Anthropic investment, while Alphabet recorded 77.1 billion dollars in unrealized gains on equity securities. Seven of the 11 major sectors posted double-digit profit growth from a year earlier, with the energy sector expected to rise about 143%.
