Salesforce.com IncReported plan to spend up to $2B acquiring Listen Labs extends Salesforce's M&A push into agentic AI, though valuation risk is flagged.

Salesforce is reportedly prepared to spend as much as $2 billion to acquire Listen Labs, an AI-powered customer research platform, in a move that would extend its aggressive M&A push into generative and agentic AI. The potential deal, reported on September 9, follows Salesforce's recently completed approximately $3.6 billion acquisition of customer service AI agent provider Fin, formerly Intercom. Listen Labs uses artificial intelligence to conduct customer interviews through audio and video and analyze the responses, which could feed qualitative customer insights into Salesforce Agentforce, the company's platform for building and deploying AI agents, as well as its broader Data Cloud strategy. The biggest concern surrounding the potential deal is valuation, since paying as much as $2 billion for a relatively small AI company would leave limited room for execution mistakes, while integration challenges and privacy concerns around customer conversations could add regulatory and reputational risks. Institutional support for Salesforce remains strong, with 99 hedge funds holding stakes at the end of the second quarter, down from 101 in the previous quarter, and short interest at approximately 3.22% of shares, or roughly 26.5 million shares, as of August 14.
