Samsung Electronics Co LtdSamsung accelerates Yongin fab launch to 2029, part of government push to double memory-chip capacity.
Samsung Electronics plans to begin operations at its first fabrication plant in Yongin, south of Seoul, by 2029, one to two years ahead of the original schedule, a company spokesperson said. The accelerated timeline is part of a broader government push to double South Korea's memory-chip production capacity within five years by fast-tracking fab construction by Samsung and SK Hynix in Yongin and building a new chip cluster in Gwangju city. Both Samsung and SK Hynix last month pledged to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in expanding domestic production capacity after President Lee Jae Myung called for measures to narrow regional economic divides. Samsung shares traded 9% lower on Monday.
