FTC probe could lead to heavy fines, materially affecting financial condition.
Chinese online fast-fashion retailer Shein disclosed in its Hong Kong initial public offering filing that it is under investigation by the US Federal Trade Commission and could face significant financial penalties. The company stated in the document that regardless of the outcome of the probe, it may be required to make substantial monetary payments, which could materially and adversely affect its financial condition and results of operations. An FTC spokesperson confirmed the agency is conducting a consumer protection investigation. Shein did not disclose the reason for the investigation and did not immediately respond to a request for comment. According to sources familiar with the matter, supply chain risk disclosures had become an obstacle in its planned IPOs in New York and London, prompting the company to shift its listing plans to Hong Kong.
