South Korea's Ministry of Economy and Finance held an emergency market review and announced plans to stabilize markets after the KOSPI index plunged nearly 50% over the past 40 days. The KOSPI, dominated by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix which together account for roughly 50% of the index, had more than doubled in the first half of 2026 amid the AI boom before the sharp sell-off. The iShares MSCI South Korea ETF, which tracks the KOSPI, has fallen from $220 to below $150 and is approaching a technical confluence zone at the 40-week moving average and the April ignition level. Demand for high-bandwidth memory remains firm amid global shortages, supporting the fundamental story for the semiconductor-heavy index.
