SK Hynix IncArticle highlights extreme concentration in KOSPI driven by AI-related stocks; SK Hynix is a major AI beneficiary, but the meme-like volatility and potential bubble risk could negatively impact its stock if sentiment shifts.
South Korea's KOSPI Composite Index has been swinging wildly, gaining or losing between 2% and 10% in 25 of the last 37 trading sessions, driven by extreme concentration and retail investors' use of leveraged exchange-traded funds. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix now account for more than 50% of the KOSPI's market-cap weighting, while Korean leveraged ETF net assets reached approximately $50 billion at the end of June, four times that of the U.S. relative to market size. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite share similar risk factors, with the 14 largest components making up almost 45% of the S&P 500 and the top 10 companies accounting for over 67% of the Nasdaq-100, all heavily reliant on artificial intelligence. U.S. leveraged and inverse ETFs made up 31% of all U.S.-listed ETF launches in the first half of 2026, holding about $200 billion in assets and providing an estimated $500 billion in notional exposure, while zero-day-to-expiration options now account for 48% of retail investors' options volume. The dynamics seen in the KOSPI may foreshadow meme-like movements in major U.S. indexes, especially given historical patterns of early-stage bubbles in transformative technologies.
