South Korean stocks plunged on the 16th, briefly falling 7%. A renewed sell-off in semiconductor shares sent the KOSPI down 502.44 points, or 6.90%, to 6,781.97 as of 10:13 a.m. Japan time. The sharp decline triggered a sidecar, temporarily halting program trading. Chip giant SK Hynix tumbled as much as 11.7%, while Samsung Electronics dropped 8.9%. The two companies alone account for just over half of the KOSPI's total market capitalization. Despite the recent slide and volatility, the KOSPI is still up more than 62% year-to-date, making it one of the world's best-performing indices.
