Musk's Tesla Moment, Mortgage Rates Hit 7.45%, and Google's Space Data Center Bet
Elon Musk may be poised for a Zuckerberg-style comeback moment as Tesla prepares to debut its Roadster on October 1st in Waco, Texas, and ramps up production at its Tesla Semi factory targeting 50,000 units a year. Meanwhile, the average interest rate on a 30-year mortgage has climbed to 7.45%, its highest level in three years, pushing the monthly payment on a $500,000 mortgage to $3,479 — up from $2,995 just seven months ago, an additional $5,813 a year in mortgage interest expense for homebuyers. On the tech front, Alphabet is launching data centers in space in partnership with Planet Labs for the first time on October 1st, carrying its TPUs aboard a SpaceX booster, a move that could strengthen its position against competitors in both AI chips and driverless cars through Waymo. Bradley Tusk, a longtime tech investor and political strategist, said on the show that OpenAI has about 1 trillion4 in Capex commitments, roughly $1 trillion more than Anthropic's approximately $400 billion, and argued OpenAI and Anthropic are wildly overvalued. Tusk also praised Meta's open-source AI inference strategy as brilliant, though he said he is not a Mark Zuckerberg fan due to the harm he believes Instagram has caused to children.

Google to Conduct First Orbital Test of AI Chips in Space, Launching Prototype Satellite Next Week
Google, a subsidiary of US-based Alphabet, announced on the 24th that it will launch a prototype satellite next week. This will be the first on-orbit test of its research project "Project Suncatcher," which explores the possibility of building large-scale artificial intelligence infrastructure in space. In this test, the company is partnering with satellite company Planet Labs, and the satellite will be launched on SpaceX's upcoming launch mission "Transporter 18." The test will examine how well Google's AI hardware can withstand the forces of launch, radiation in low Earth orbit, and extreme temperatures. After launch, the prototype satellite, equipped with the company's independently developed AI chip, the Tensor Processing Unit, will be placed in low Earth orbit to verify whether it can operate stably in space, and to evaluate designs for cooling power-hungry semiconductors in the vacuum of space. However, experts point out that given the high cost of launches, technical constraints, and bottlenecks in satellite production, it will still take many years before this concept becomes commercially viable. In 2027, the company aims to launch two satellites and test the high-capacity laser communications needed to connect future clusters of computers.

XPRIZE Wildfire Awards $4.55M Across Two Tracks of $11M Competition
XPRIZE has awarded $4.55 million to innovators advancing wildfire detection and response technologies across both tracks of its $11 million XPRIZE Wildfire competition, announced at a ceremony at the New York City Fire Museum. The $1.05 million awarded across five Track A teams, focused on Space-Based Wildfire Detection and Intelligence, went to SIRIUS Wildfire Alliance with $500,000, Team Snuffed with $250,000, and MyRadar, DeepFire and Mayday.AI with $100,000 each. The $3.5 million awarded across three Track B finalist teams, focused on Autonomous Wildfire Response, went to Anduril Industries with $1.2 million, Dryad Networks with $800,000 and AURA Foresight with $500,000, while Anduril also received the $1 million Lockheed Martin Accurate Detection Intelligence Bonus Prize. Track B competitors were tested in the Alaskan wilderness in June 2026, tasked with autonomously detecting and fully suppressing a high-risk fire within 10 minutes of ignition across 1,000 square kilometers of challenging terrain. The competition now moves into a 12- to 15-month Impact Phase aimed at translating the technologies into deployable real-world wildfire management solutions.
