Redwire Corporation announced that its venture company SpaceMD has appointed Paul Reichert, former Principal Investigator at Merck Research Laboratories, and Niki Werkheiser, former Director of Technology Maturation at NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate, to strategic advisory roles. Reichert will serve as Scientific Advisor, shaping SpaceMD's scientific and commercial roadmap and supporting an orbital research and manufacturing pipeline, while Werkheiser will act as Strategic Advisor, working with the team and biotech partners to develop new therapeutic concepts and apply SpaceMD technologies to pharmaceutical research on the International Space Station and emerging commercial platforms. SpaceMD leverages its Pharmaceutical In-Space Laboratory technology to grow seed crystals in microgravity, and since November 2023, 54 PIL-BOX systems have flown to the ISS, successfully crystallizing 45 unique compounds including insulin and molecules for treating cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes. The appointments come amid rising demand for SpaceMD's in-space pharmaceutical development capabilities.
