SpaceX and Tesla are pursuing plans to build Terafab Texas, an enormous semiconductor facility in Grimes, Texas, that would become the world's largest building by footprint. The project is expected to exceed 100 million square feet, far surpassing the Pentagon's roughly 6.6 million square feet and China's New Century Global Center at 18.9 million square feet. The facility will manufacture, package, and test advanced logic and memory chips for edge computing and inference, with potential uses including Tesla's Optimus robots, autonomous Cybercabs, and SpaceX data centers. SpaceX projects the first phase will cost about $16.8 billion and employ more than 3,000 people, though a May filing set the initial investment at $55 billion, potentially rising to $119 billion. Elon Musk, CEO of both companies, stated that combined demand from SpaceX and Tesla will exceed the world's available chip supply, making Terafab essential.
