SpaceX became a major customer for Tesla's energy storage business, buying about $329 million worth of Tesla Megapacks in the first half of 2026, including $295 million in the second quarter alone, compared with $506 million for all of 2025. The purchases are tied to the growing power needs of artificial intelligence, as SpaceX uses the batteries to handle sudden swings in electricity demand during AI training runs, where power demand can change by as much as 70% in a fraction of a second. Tesla's energy storage deployments reached 13.5 gigawatt-hours in the second quarter, up 53% sequentially and the company's second-best quarter on record, though energy gross margin fell to 20.4% from 39.5% due to a $240 million warranty true-up and the absence of a prior tariff benefit. Tesla is also exploring Megapods, which would combine AI computing and battery storage in a single package, potentially deployed at Supercharger locations where Tesla controls around 7 gigawatts of power capacity. Musk's target is 20 gigawatts of power and cooling online by the end of 2027, with a fallback of around 15 gigawatts, suggesting a multi-year buildout that could lock in growing demand for Tesla's Megapacks.
