SpaceX is planning to launch millions of artificial intelligence data center satellites into orbit, with a first design featuring a 70-meter wingspan and 20-meter deployed height, far larger than its Starlink satellites. The company aims to have 1 gigawatt of AI compute capacity in orbit by the end of 2027, scaling to 1 terawatt by the end of 2030, which would require approximately 6.67 million satellites at a peak output of 150 kilowatts each. To support this, SpaceX is building an over 11-million-square-foot factory called Gigasat on a more than 1,000-acre site in Bastrop, Texas, for end-to-end production. The satellites will be placed in a higher-altitude sun-synchronous orbit for predictable solar power, but this could make them more visible at night and potentially impair dark-sky viewing. SpaceX, which recently completed a $75 billion initial public offering, faces no direct competitors in this new orbital data center niche, though the ambitious timeline and costs remain significant challenges.
