Alphabet Inc Class CGoogle has begun its most ambitious pretraining run for Gemini 4, signaling strong AI progress.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced during the company's earnings call that Google has begun its most ambitious pretraining run yet for Gemini 4, a model that has not been officially unveiled or given a launch timeline. Pichai said he is very excited by the internal progress and confident people will be pleased, adding that the model is being built to compete at the frontier level of where the frontier will be when Gemini 4 comes out. The remarks signal Google is targeting future capabilities rather than matching today's leading AI models, as the race intensifies among rivals including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Elon Musk's xAI. Pichai also noted that the recently released Gemini Flash 3.6 model improved by more than 10 percentage points on coding benchmarks within six weeks, and Google plans to ship updated models every month. The AI update accompanied another strong quarter for Alphabet, with its 12th straight quarter of double-digit revenue growth, Google Cloud revenue climbing 32% year over year, and a record backlog of more than $106 billion in remaining performance obligations.
