Synopsys IncSynopsys is discontinuing low-margin manufacturing software to focus on higher-margin AI design, which should improve profitability.
Synopsys, a major U.S. semiconductor design company, plans to discontinue a suite of manufacturing process management software used by chipmakers worldwide, according to six people familiar with the matter. The move aims to redirect resources toward higher-margin areas such as artificial intelligence design. Two of the people said Synopsys notified more than 10 semiconductor manufacturers in April and May, including Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Kioxia Holdings, and Kolbo, of its decision to end support. The affected products include equipment engineering systems and fault detection and classification tools, which are part of a factory automation software suite that monitors and detects anomalies. The company has already cut dozens of jobs and plans to finalize discussions on maintenance obligations by July.
