Teledyne Space Imaging celebrated a major milestone after NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched on August 30 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, bringing the company's total scientific imaging sensors in space to more than 1,000. Teledyne supplied detector technologies for both of Roman's primary instruments, including 18 H4RG-10 infrared detectors for the Wide Field Instrument, forming the largest infrared focal plane ever flown, and three CCD311-20 detectors for the Coronagraph Instrument. The company was awarded a $23 million contract in 2018 to provide 24 sensor chip assemblies, later expanded to 28, with each detector exceeding performance specs and enabling a 20 percent increase in spectral bandwidth. Roman, NASA's flagship astrophysics observatory, will investigate dark energy, exoplanets, and the evolution of the Universe, building on Teledyne's legacy with Hubble and James Webb.
