Alphabet Inc Class CAlphabet's heavy AI spending and cash burn, with capex guidance raised to $195-205B, spooked investors.
Technology stocks tumbled on Thursday after heavy AI spending by Tesla and Google rattled investors. Tesla shares plunged more than 12 percent, one of its biggest ever drops, after profits were hit by AI investments, while Alphabet fell almost 7 percent as it burned through billions in cash for its own AI outlays. The Nasdaq composite slid 2.6 percent in its worst day in nearly two months, with a surging oil price adding to rate-hike fears. Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle also sold off amid broader anxiety over AI costs and the launch of cheaper Chinese rival Kimi K3. Alphabet warned capital expenditure could reach between $195 billion and $205 billion this year, up from a prior estimate of $180 billion to $190 billion, and burned through $5.9 billion of cash in the three months to June.
