Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd.TSMC manufactured Etched's first chip, indicating new customer demand for its fabrication services.

Jack Selby, managing director at Thiel Capital and founder of Copper Sky Capital, secured an allocation in Etched’s $120 million Series A two years ago by promising to help the chip startup eventually reshore fabrication to TSMC’s Arizona facility. Etched, a four-year-old startup valued at $5 billion, announced this week that TSMC had manufactured its first chip earlier this year and plans to ship systems later this summer, though scaling production may be challenging due to limited capacity at TSMC’s Taiwan factories. Selby, a board member of the Arizona Commerce Authority, said Etched understood Copper Sky’s connectivity to the local semiconductor industry and the TSMC GIGAFAB in Arizona. Copper Sky, which raised a $115 million first fund focused on Arizona and the Southwest, is now raising a $300 million second fund to invest in hardware companies nationwide that can set up manufacturing in Arizona.
