Trump Announces Plan to Scrap 10% Tariff on Irish Whiskey

President Donald Trump announced plans to scrap the 10% import tariff on whiskey from Ireland, part of the US tariffs imposed on wine and spirits from the European Union. Speaking on Sunday, September 13, while attending a golf tournament in Ireland, Trump said he had discussed the impact of the tariffs with Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin as well as Irish golfer Shane Lowry. Wine and spirits from the European Union had previously been subject to a 15% import tariff under the US-EU trade agreement reached last year, before the US announced new tariff measures in July, leaving the rate for EU goods at 10%. The Irish Whiskey Association welcomed the announcement, saying it would continue talks with industry partners in both the European Union and the United States to push for alcohol beverage exports to return to a joint zero-for-zero tariff exemption framework. Eoin O Cathain, director of the Irish Whiskey Association, said Irish whiskey is one of the products that best reflects the trade relationship between the United States and Ireland, and expressed hope that the tariff removal will take full effect.
