Dell Technologies IncThin profit margins on AI servers and rising memory/storage costs pressure profitability

President Donald Trump urged Americans to buy Dell for the third time in five months during a White House ceremony on July 6, briefly lifting the stock as much as 10%. Despite the endorsement and a 220% rally this year driven by booming AI server sales, options market data shows traders are still betting against the stock, with the open-interest put-call ratio staying above 1. Dell's AI server revenue surged 757% over the past year, but the company builds servers around Nvidia's chips, passing most of the cost to customers and leaving thin profit margins. In the infrastructure segment housing AI servers, operating margin fell to 8.8% during the ramp of Nvidia's Blackwell chips, and as AI server sales grew, overall segment margin slipped to 10.5%. Meanwhile, costs for memory and storage parts rose about 10% over the past 20 days, outpacing Dell's roughly 4% stock gain, adding pressure to profitability.
