President Donald Trump said on Friday that data centers could eventually become a bigger industry than oil, calling them tremendously important for the U.S. economy. In an interview with Punchbowl, he criticized Texas for opposing data centers, calling it a mistake, and urged states to cut taxes to encourage their development. Trump stated that if he were governor, he would want data centers so badly and would cut taxes, warning that restricting data centers would hinder AI growth and benefit other countries. He also highlighted a policy allowing companies building AI data centers to construct their own power generation facilities with fast-track approvals, which he said avoids straining the aging U.S. power grid and enables excess electricity to be fed back into the grid. Trump asserted that the U.S. is leading AI because of him and cannot afford to lose the AI race to China, adding that he plans to discuss the issue with Chinese President Xi Jinping during an upcoming meeting.
