Trump signs order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America amid trade war

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America, effective immediately, amid a new round of trade war with Canada after negotiations failed and retaliatory tariffs were imposed. The order directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to update the geographic names database. Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney affirmed that Canada will continue to call the lake Lake Ontario, in the past, present, and forever. This is the second such renaming, following the change of the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America, and comes after Trump announced a 50% tariff on Canadian goods worth $20 billion, with Canada retaliating with tariffs of up to 50%, effective September 8, though some scope has been reduced. Trump said Canada has long taken advantage of the U.S. in trade and dismissed concerns about the cost of living, insisting the situation will ultimately be beneficial to the U.S.
