The US Supreme Court has ruled that reciprocal tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act are unconstitutional, revealing that the Trump administration will have to refund approximately 100 billion dollars, or 15.8 trillion yen. According to documents submitted by Customs and Border Protection to the Court of International Trade, as of the end of July, 60 percent of the total 166 billion dollars collected under the unconstitutional tariffs has been returned to businesses and other entities. With nearly 30 billion dollars in cases still being processed, the refund amount is expected to grow further. Tariff revenue had been positioned as a funding source for the large-scale tax cuts promoted by President Trump, making fiscal strain from the surge in refunds unavoidable.
