Trump Threatens to Teach Canada a Lesson After Trade Talks Collapse

President Donald Trump has sent a tough signal to Canada after trade talks between the two countries collapsed, stating that it is time for the United States to make Canada understand that it cannot act in this manner any longer. Trump said during an interview on Wednesday (Aug. 26) that the offer the U.S. had previously made to Canada was quite good, and stressed that Canada has nothing the U.S. needs and that the U.S. can source goods from elsewhere. This stance comes after the U.S. announced a 50% tariff on Canadian imports, worth about $20 billion, last Saturday (Aug. 22), following the failure of negotiations to reach a conclusion. Canada retaliated by announcing tariffs on U.S. goods worth about $20 billion per year on Tuesday (Aug. 25), with the counter-tariffs set to take effect on Sept. 8. Trump also announced a 50% tariff on cars and parts from Canada starting Jan. 1. Meanwhile, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said there is no channel open for negotiations with Canada, and warned that if Canada takes further retaliatory measures, the U.S. is ready to respond in kind. White House adviser Peter Navarro assessed that any eventual deal Canada reaches with the U.S. could come with stricter terms than the original offer.
