Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and Sony have formed a $4.69 billion image-sensor joint venture, with TSMC's U.S.-traded shares climbing about 2.2% Wednesday morning. Sony will invest 465 billion yen, or roughly $2.92 billion, while TSMC will put in 282 billion yen, about 38% of the combined 747 billion yen investment. The new company, Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing, will be based in Kumamoto, Japan, with Sony controlling the venture and handling sensor technology, product planning, and design, while TSMC provides advanced manufacturing processes and production expertise. Volume production is targeted for 2029, with smartphone image sensors expected to be the first product. Capital will be deployed in stages depending on demand, and future funding assumes Japanese government support.
