U.S. and Canada Continue Talks to Avert Additional Tariffs, Discussing Autos and Dairy, Sources Say

Canada and the United States are engaged in negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement in which Canada would address the Trump administration's trade demands in exchange for avoiding the imposition of additional U.S. tariffs, according to sources familiar with the matter. The Trump administration has imposed tariffs on imports from Canada and has announced that if Canada fails to address U.S. grievances by July, a 50 percent tariff will be applied to a wide range of imports starting August 19. The discussions include Canada eliminating tariffs on U.S.-made automobiles, accepting the U.S. interpretation of how dairy import quotas are allocated, and working to resume sales of U.S. alcoholic beverages that were removed from shelves in key Canadian provinces. In return, the United States would lower the tariffs it currently imposes on Canadian steel and aluminum.
