Uber Technologies IncUber cuts 10% of customer service jobs to expand AI use, indicating restructuring and potential disruption.

Uber has cut about 10% of jobs in its customer service operations as it restructures to simplify operations and embrace artificial intelligence, Bloomberg reported. The company announced the cuts to its community operations team on July 22, with a spokesperson saying it is working to simplify operations, strengthen in-person collaboration, and continue to embrace AI. Megha Yethatika, Uber's vice president of global community operations, said in a memo that the department has made some strides in adopting AI but needs an effective organization to layer AI on, adding that the company cannot scale frontier technology on top of fragmented processes. Affected remote employees were asked to relocate to a hub office in line with the return-to-office policy. This marks Uber's first workforce reduction directly linked to AI-driven efficiency and its second round of job cuts in less than two months, following a 23% cut to its people division in June and a May announcement that it would slow hiring as it expanded AI use.
