UK media regulator Ofcom has launched an investigation into the UK arm of Chinese short-video app TikTok over whether it has failed to protect children from harmful content. Ofcom will examine whether the platform's systems for determining if a user is a child and its safeguards against exposure to harmful content are adequate. The regulator had already pointed out in May that TikTok had not taken meaningful measures, but stressed that the opening of this investigation does not mean a conclusion of breach of duty. TikTok denied any violation, responding in writing that it strictly enforces age-appropriate user experiences.
