MiniMax Group IncUS security agencies accuse MiniMax of systematically extracting knowledge from American AI models via distillation, violating US companies' terms of service.

US security agencies have accused six leading Chinese AI technology companies—DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba Group Holding, MiniMax, StepFun, and Z.AI Co.—of systematically extracting knowledge from American AI models since 2024 using a technique called distillation, which transfers knowledge from large models to smaller ones. The NSA, FBI, and CISA stated that these Chinese companies violated the terms of service of US companies and may have acted with the knowledge of the Chinese government. The announcement comes ahead of a summit between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping, to be held at the White House in a few weeks, amid technological tensions between the two countries.
