The United States has announced a broad suspension of imports from Canada, effective September 29, 2026, marking the biggest rupture in the modern history of trade relations between the two countries. The measure follows the US imposition of a 50% tariff on roughly 20 billion US dollars worth of Canadian imports last month, and Canada's retaliation with tariffs on US imports that took effect after midnight on Tuesday, September 8. The goods banned from import in this round cover nearly all alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine, whisky, bourbon, rum, vodka, vermouth, tequila, mezcal and brandy, as well as motorcycles and dairy products and processed ingredients such as whey protein, invert sugar, molasses, cane syrup and non-alcoholic beer.
