The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index for July came in at 90.8, down from 92.2 the previous month and significantly below the Reuters consensus estimate of 92.3. The Present Situation Index fell 3.6 points to 114.9, while the Expectations Index held steady at 74.7. Chief Economist Dana Peterson noted that the downward trend that began in late 2021 has continued. The share of consumers viewing current business conditions as good declined to 18.9 percent, while those saying conditions are bad rose to 17.8 percent. The proportion seeing jobs as plentiful fell to 24.6 percent. Looking ahead six months, the share expecting business conditions to improve dropped to 17.8 percent, while those anticipating a deterioration climbed to 21.1 percent.
