The U.S. current account deficit widened more than expected in the first quarter, increasing $5.8 billion, or 2.6%, to $226.8 billion. The Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis reported the deficit, which measures the flow of goods, services and investments, was revised up to $221.1 billion for the fourth quarter from the previously estimated $190.7 billion. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast a $215.0 billion deficit. The first-quarter deficit represented 2.9% of gross domestic product, up from 2.8% in the prior quarter, while the primary income balance swung to a $13.3 billion shortfall from a $3.431 billion surplus.
