The US Department of Energy has made a conditional commitment for a loan package of up to US$17.5 billion to finance Westinghouse Electric Company’s purchase of long-lead items for up to 10 AP1000 nuclear reactors in the United States. Cameco Corporation, which co-owns Westinghouse with Brookfield Renewable Partners, welcomed the announcement, saying it would accelerate deployment of the proven reactor technology. The loan would be administered through a special purpose vehicle of Westinghouse, with each of up to five project funding vehicles requiring approximately $500 million in equity from both the SPV and an approved partner before accessing DOE funds. The loan is expected to be repaid from proceeds of the sale of the long-lead items once partners reach final investment decisions. Definitive agreements and satisfaction of technical, legal, environmental, and financial conditions are still required before the loan is funded.
