In currency markets, the yen edged higher against the dollar amid easing Middle East concerns following reports that the US had called off strikes on Iran, with the dollar trading at 163.70 to 163.80 yen, a gain of 0.12 yen from the same time the previous session. In the bond market, buying prevailed after a sharp drop in crude oil prices, pushing the yield on the 10-year US Treasury note down 0.03 percentage point to 4.65 percent. On the NYMEX, crude oil futures fell sharply for a second day as the US and Iran halted hostilities, with the front-month September West Texas Intermediate contract dropping 6.70 dollars to settle at 82.61 dollars a barrel. On the COMEX, gold futures extended gains, supported by lower long-term US interest rates and a weaker dollar amid easing Middle East tensions, with the most active August contract rising 6.20 dollars to settle at 4,077.00 dollars an ounce. The CME Nikkei 225 futures for September delivery settled at 64,055 yen, down 1,115 points from the Osaka September contract settlement price.
