US removes Syria from state sponsors of terrorism list after 47 years

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States has removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, after Syria had been on the list for 47 years, in hopes that this will help open a path to prosperity for the Syrian people. The move is expected to pave the way for private sector investment and help Syria re-enter the global economic system. It also reflects a hope to draw Syria into the US sphere of influence to counterbalance and prevent Syria from turning to China or Russia. However, Syria still faces high risks from an unsettled security situation. The government still lacks genuine representation of the people, and it remains amid simmering tensions between neighboring countries such as Israel and Turkey. The US government has also recognized Ahmad al-Sharaa as Syria's new president. He is a former armed group leader whom the US once placed a bounty on as the leader of an al-Qaeda affiliate. At the same time, the armed group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an Islamist group under the leadership of Ahmad al-Sharaa, has likewise been removed by the US from its list of global terrorist organizations.
