US stocks ended Wednesday's session in negative territory after Federal Reserve officials unanimously voted to hold interest rates at their June FOMC meeting, while also forecasting at least one possible rate hike ahead. The Dow fell about 500 points, or 1%, the Nasdaq dropped 1.3%, and the S&P 500 declined slightly less than the Nasdaq. All 11 S&P 500 sectors closed in the red, with communication services, consumer discretionary, and consumer staples each down more than 2%. Mega-cap stocks lagged, with Microsoft down 4%, Amazon down 3.5%, and Meta down 5%, while semiconductors bucked the trend, as Broadcom rose 4% and Arm gained more than 5%. This was Kevin Warsh's first FOMC meeting as the new chairman of the Fed.
